Common Causes of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in Women

Common Causes of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in Women

1. The most common sexual difficulty in women is Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), and the most common form of HSDD is acquired, which means that a person used to feel sexual desire, but no longer does. It is often transitory or situational, and the result of stress and overwork. There is nothing wrong with you if you are tired and overworked, and as a result do not feel sexual desire. The solution is pretty obvious, although it may take time to change old patterns such as being a workaholic or perhaps managing your time poorly.

2. The physiological component of a low sexual appetite is low sexual drive. A certain amount of testosterone is necessary for sexual drive, especially for women. It is a good idea to have your testosterone level checked before you see a therapist, because no amount of psychological work will help to restore a testosterone deficiency.

3. Hormonal events in a woman’s life such as pregnancy and childbirth (oxytocin – the bonding hormone can temporarily suppress testosterone), menstrual cycle and menopause are known to negatively affect a woman’s sexual yearnings.

4 A lack of interest in sex can also be the result of long term use of oral contraceptives which can result in a decreased level of testosterone.

5. Anti-depressants and common anti-anxiety agents such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft are also notorious for decreasing sexual appetite.

6. Body-image issues may also often cause low sexual desire. Feeling fat is certainly the most notorious of these issues. Lack of exercise related to extra weight can cause low levels of dopamine, a brain chemical which is highly related to the ability to experience pleasure.

7. Alcohol, recreational drugs and smoking can also affect a woman’s sexual drive and desire.

8. Sexual desire discrepancy may more accurately be called an expressed lack of sexual desire.

9. More serious causes of HSSD, which require therapy, include clinical levels of anxiety or depression, relationship problems, or depression and suppressed reactions to past traumatic events.

What can you do to help increase your sexual desire? Strengthen your kidney.. The kidney is the reservoir of sexual energy; it also governs the brain. Too much mental activity can drain the kidney. See an acupuncturist for overall health improvements.

Get physical.

A brisk walk of 15 to 20 minutes a day, or any type of physical exercise will increase the dopamine – the “feel-good” hormone- in your brain.

Stoke the fire in the belly.

Sexual imbalances are caused by too much coldness in the belly, according to ancient Chinese sexology. Massaging the belly below the navel with one hand over the other in circles, 36 times in each direction, will help bring more heat thus balancing the female reproductive organs.
